What this question trains

This question tests whether a candidate understands how a noncash accounting adjustment affects all three financial statements and how the statements stay linked. In particular, it checks knowledge of how a write-down hits operating profit, how taxes affect the after tax impact, how noncash charges are reversed on the cash flow statement, and how the balance sheet reflects both the asset reduction and the change in retained earnings. Interviewers ask questions like this to see if a candidate can trace an accounting event through the full financial model and explain the connection between earnings, cash, and equity.
