What this question trains
This question tests whether you can evaluate credit risk from several angles, not just one ratio. In an investment banking interview, you should be able to explain how liquidity ratios show short term repayment capacity, how leverage and solvency ratios indicate the debt burden, how coverage ratios measure the ability to service interest and principal, and how profitability ratios support the durability of that repayment capacity. Interviewers ask this because real credit analysis requires linking the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow profile to a company’s ability to meet obligations over time.
A strong answer also shows judgment about why no single metric is enough. A company can look profitable but still have weak cash flow or limited near term liquidity, so the interviewer wants to see that you understand the tradeoffs and can compare ratios across time and against peers to form a balanced view of credit quality.
