What this question trains

This question tests whether you understand how analysts move from revenue to different levels of profit, and why each margin highlights a different layer of performance. In investment banking interviews, candidates are often expected to explain the relationship between gross profit, operating profit, EBITDA, and net income, and to connect each measure to the costs and accounting items it includes or excludes.

It also checks your ability to think critically about comparability across companies. Interviewers want to see that you know why some margins are better for benchmarking operating performance, why others reflect the impact of financing and taxes, and why EBITDA is often used when comparing businesses across capital structures or accounting treatments.
