What this question trains

This problem tests whether a candidate understands the core timing rules behind accrual accounting. The revenue recognition principle says revenue is recorded when it is earned through delivery of goods or completion of services, not necessarily when cash is received. The matching principle says the expenses that helped generate that revenue should be recorded in the same period, so the income statement reflects the economic activity of that period rather than just cash movements.

Interviewers ask this because these concepts are fundamental to reading financial statements, building forecasts, and understanding how reported earnings can differ from cash flow. A strong answer shows that the candidate can connect business activity, accounting timing, and the logic behind accurate period reporting.
