What this question trains

This problem tests whether you can describe what each of the three financial statements measures, how they differ in timing and purpose, and how they fit together. Interviewers ask this because a strong finance candidate should understand the basic accounting framework behind financial analysis, valuation, and modeling, including the difference between profitability, financial position, and cash generation.

It also checks that you know the key building blocks of each statement and the logic that connects them, such as revenue and expenses on the income statement, assets and funding sources on the balance sheet, and the reconciliation from accounting profit to actual cash flow. In investment banking interviews, this is a core foundation topic because nearly every valuation or operating model relies on correctly interpreting how the three statements interact.
