What this question trains
This question tests whether you can distinguish a simple income measure from a full return measure on fixed income securities. Current yield focuses on the coupon income relative to the bond’s market price, while yield to maturity requires you to think through all of the bond’s cash flows, including coupon payments, the return of principal at maturity, and the timing of those payments. It also checks whether you understand the reinvestment assumption built into yield to maturity, which is a common interview point in debt and leveraged finance discussions.
Interviewers ask this because bond valuation and return analysis are basic building blocks in capital markets. A strong candidate should be able to explain what each measure captures, what it leaves out, and why the two can differ meaningfully when a bond trades away from par.
