What this question trains

This question tests your understanding of how debt financing differs from equity investing and how forecast assumptions feed into lender protections. In a lending process, the focus is not on maximizing upside story, but on showing that the company can reliably service debt and stay within covenant limits under a reasonable set of assumptions. Interviewers use this to see whether you understand why lenders prefer conservatism, how EBITDA forecasts are used in covenant setting, and why borrowers want room for performance to come in below plan without triggering a default. It also checks whether you can explain the relationship between forecast credibility, lender risk tolerance, and the cushion that protects both sides if operating performance weakens.
