What this question trains
This question tests a core derivatives concept that comes up often in capital markets and sales and trading interviews: the relationship between exercise rights and option value. Candidates need to understand the distinction between options that can be exercised only at expiration and options that can be exercised earlier, as well as why extra flexibility affects pricing. Interviewers ask this because option features matter in trading, valuation, hedging, and structuring conversations, and a strong answer shows you can think about timing optionality, not just basic payoff profiles.
It also checks whether you can reason about why the ability to exercise early is not automatically optimal. A good candidate should be able to discuss the tradeoff between exercising now and keeping the option open, including the role of remaining time value and uncertainty about future market moves.
