What this question trains

This problem tests whether a candidate understands that most core financial statement line items still look familiar in shipping, but some items are presented and taxed differently. Interviewers use it to check attention to industry specific accounting presentation, especially how depreciation and amortization may be shown separately and how that affects EBITDA analysis, as well as how tax treatment can differ because of flagging, domicile, and vessel based or jurisdiction specific taxes. It also reinforces the broader skill of adjusting reported numbers for non recurring items and interpreting financial statements in the context of the underlying business model, which is a common expectation in industry focused investment banking interviews.
