What this question trains

This question tests whether a candidate understands how successful efforts accounting and full cost accounting change the timing of expense recognition for exploration and development costs in an E and P business. Interviewers use it to see if you can connect accounting policy choices to reported earnings, asset values, depreciation, depletion and amortization, and the possibility of impairment, rather than memorizing definitions in isolation.

A strong answer should explain the logic of capitalizing versus expensing costs, then trace how that choice flows through the income statement and balance sheet over time for two otherwise identical companies. The key skill is understanding that the accounting method affects not just current period profit, but also the carrying value of oil and gas assets, retained earnings, and future expense patterns.
