What this question trains

This problem tests whether a candidate understands the difference between equity value and enterprise value, and how consolidation affects valuation multiples. In investment banking interviews, this comes up because analysts must make sure the numerator and denominator in a multiple are measured on the same basis, especially when a parent company owns a subsidiary but not all of it. The reasoning requires understanding how consolidated financial statements can include 100 percent of a subsidiary’s operating results even when some of that business belongs to outside shareholders, and why the valuation bridge has to account for that outside claim.
