What this question trains
This question tests whether you understand the time value of money and the structure of a DCF. Terminal value represents the value of the business beyond the explicit forecast period, but it is calculated as of the end of that forecast period, not as of today. To arrive at an enterprise value or equity value on the valuation date, the analyst must think carefully about when each cash flow and value component is measured, then bring future value back into present value terms using the appropriate discounting logic. Interviewers ask this because it checks whether you can connect the mechanics of DCF to the underlying finance concept, not just memorize the formula.
