What this question trains

This problem tests whether you understand the intuition behind one of the most common valuation multiples, the price investors are willing to pay for a company’s earnings. In interviews, bankers expect you to explain not just the formula, but what the multiple says about market expectations, how it is used to compare companies within a peer group, and why a higher or lower multiple can matter in assessing relative value.

It also checks that you understand how to interpret the metric at both the share and company level, and why analysts focus on comparability, earnings quality, and industry context when using it. Interviewers ask this because P/E is a basic but important tool in equity valuation, and a strong answer shows you can connect a simple ratio to practical investment judgment.
